Funders

The work of DYN has been supported by many generous grants, including major support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Two recent grants in June 2010 have allowed DYN to expand its reach to serve more Chicago young people.

The MacArthur Foundation will support DYN over three years in implementing a learning network to serve all Chicago youth. The DYN work will link schools, libraries, museums, afterschool programs, and online communities into one network in order to provide more enriching learning opportunities for the city’s young people.

The MacArthur Foundation’s five-year, $50 million Digital Media and Learning Initiative has helped determine how digital technologies are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life.

The Gates Foundation’s two-and-a-half year funding commitment will support DYN’s work in developing a learning model that will span the spaces where youth spend their time – online, in school, after school, at home, and in the community. The DYN model would cultivate young people’s academic tenacity and college preparedness, linking new media literacies to traditional subjects as defined by the common core standards set out nationally.

The Gates Foundation has shown an ongoing commitment to increase high school graduation and college-readiness rates in the United States through improving high school education nationwide, enhancing teaching and learning in classrooms, encouraging commitments to common state standards and goals nationwide, and increasing public and political support for improving high school education.
